The Move-Out Cleaning Checklist That Actually Protects Your Deposit

Empty apartment kitchen being cleaned for a move-out inspection in Northern Virginia

Landlords and property managers do not grade a move-out clean on how the floors look. They grade it on the eight places most people forget.

An occupied home hides its own problems. Furniture covers the floor, food covers the pantry shelves, and a full refrigerator means nobody looks at the seals. An empty home hides nothing, and that is exactly why move-out inspections are stricter than any other cleaning standard you will be measured against.

The eight places deposits are actually lost: inside kitchen cabinets and drawers, inside the oven including the racks and door glass, inside and underneath the refrigerator, window tracks and sills, baseboards and door frames, shower grout and glass, light fixtures and vents, and the inside of the dishwasher door seal. None of those are visible in a photo of a clean floor, and all of them are on a property manager's checklist.

Order matters more than effort. Cleaning floors first is the most common mistake we see in DIY move-outs — every cabinet you wipe afterward drops crumbs and dust onto a floor you have already finished. Work top to bottom: light fixtures and vents, then upper cabinets, then counters and appliances, then lower cabinets, then baseboards, and floors dead last.

Give yourself more time than the internet suggests. A genuinely empty two-bedroom apartment takes a professional crew several hours to bring to inspection standard, and that is with commercial equipment and a fixed checklist. If you are doing it alone the evening before your key return, you are going to run out of daylight before you run out of cabinets.

One practical tip that costs nothing: photograph the property after the clean, room by room, including open cabinets and the inside of the oven. If a deduction is disputed later, dated photos of an inspection-ready home settle the conversation quickly. We do this on every move-out clean we run across the DMV, and it has resolved more disputes than any argument ever has.
